Intermediate: Identification of Colonial Cyanophyta

Online Course Information
The Intermediate: Identification of Colonial Cyanophyta online course introduces the colonial cyanobacterial taxa. These genera and species can be challenging to identify due to the variety of cell distribution, organisation and colonial structures.
Approach of this Course
Once again, this course examines the most common taxa that largely enjoy a cosmopolitan distribution. The taxa are divided into three (3) groups based on the colonial structure.
The course teaches the analyst to interpret the cell morphology and colonial structure to quickly identify a taxon or reduce the number of possible taxa to differentiate between. This is important for the efficiency and optimisation of high-throughput analytical laboratories.
What will I learn in this course?
The course introduces the colonial cyanophyte taxa commonly found in fresh, brackish and estuarine environments within Australia. Many are cosmopolitan in distribution and found around the globe. This course is structured with taxa being arranged into functional groups based on colonial structure and the mechanisms of their formation. There is an emphasis on learning to recognise and interpret the number of planes of division and distribution of cells, cell displacement, and whether stalks are present, and to recognise subtle differences between similar taxa, thereby aiding in differentiation.
As with all these identification courses, there is an emphasis on the development of good habits and core skills in the identification of taxa. The emphasis should always be on seeing the morphological characteristics and putting them into the context of the sample and the environment it represents.
The taxa within the course are not considered potentially toxic in Australia. An intermediate course on identifying potentially toxic cyanophytes is available from the course listing on the home page.
As with all these identification courses, there is an emphasis on the development of good habits and core skills in the identification of taxa. Who is it for?
This intermediate-level course is designed for analysts at all stages of their careers to build and reinforce identification skills for this group of cyanobacteria. Particularly suited to analysts and students looking for a course for ongoing professional development, or those that have undertaken the foundation-level or other intermediate-level courses in this series.
