Cyanophyte Library Plus Fundamentals Course Bundle

Online Course Information

This combined program contains five (5) courses: all foundation-level courses and intermediate-level cyanobacteria identification courses.

  • Foundation: Introduction to Microscopy
  • Foundation: Introduction to Phycology for Analysts
  • Intermediate: Identification of Potentially Toxic Cyanophyta
  • Intermediate: Identification of Heterocystous Cyanophyta
  • Intermediate: Identification of Non-Heterocystous Cyanophyta
  • Intermediate: Identification of Colonial Cyanophyta

This combined program provides a comprehensive overview of foundational microscopic practice and environmental conditions that influence cyanobacterial population growth and behaviour, which are important for analysis and interpretation, and of the identification of common cyanobacteria encountered during analysis.

The program begins with the Introduction to Microcroscopy, then the Introduction to Phycology course to provide context for the following courses, then the identification courses, starting with the potentially toxic cyanophyta course.  The program builds on the skills learned in identifying heterocystous cyanophyta, non-heterocystous cyanophyta, and then colonial cyanophyta.

Approach of this Course

This course is designed as a comprehensive program for the development of analysts and provides laboratories with a foundation to build commercial phytoplankton analytical services.

What will I learn in this course?

The foundation courses, Introduction to Microscopy and Phycology for Analysts is intended to provide new phycology analysts with all the foundational material required to work towards microscopic identification of cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae, and to prepare them for analysis by understanding the environmental forces that influence the phytoplankton and analysis, and that, in this analysis, context is everything!

This course also serves a purpose for experienced analysts working towards professional development and senior analysts for the interpretation and signing of reports for an accredited laboratory by reinforcing those concepts needed to critically evaluate analytical data.

The Intermediate: Identification of Potentially Toxic Cyanophyta, Heterocystous Cyanophyta, Non-Heterocystous Cyanophyta, and Colonial Cyanophyta is designed to build skills that encourage good habits and critical evaluation of morphology in microscopy and analysis to minimise errors in identification, and building precision and consenus in identification in busy laboratories.

Who is it for?

This comprehensive program is designed for technicians, scientists, students, or water professionals and laboratories to develop analytical and interpretive skills and services in phycology.

The courses are suitable for those with a background in microscopy and environmental monitoring. It is also suitable for laboratories for the updating of skills and professional development of analysts and as a resource to build and maintain consistency in identification amongst multiple analysts.
